The United Kingdom of Northern Ireland and Great Britain is popularly famous as UK or United Kingdom or Britain. It is the sovereign state located on the northwestern coastline of Europe. The UK is the permanent associate of the G8, the UN Security Council, the European Union and Commonwealth of Nations. Constitutional monarchy along with a parliamentary system develops the nation. The UK is surrounded by water bodies in most of the parts that include English Channel, Atlantic Sea, Irish Sea and the North Sea. The country was the first to join hands with industrialization and presently it holds the sixth position in terms of the economic condition. Although English is the major language of the UK; Welsh, Gaelic, Cornish and Irish are the other Celtic languages are also spoken in the nation. It also has an enriched sports history with cricket, football, tennis, rugby football, golf etc being the famous and well-acclaimed sports of the country.


History

The UK has an enriched history. Although the history is pretty deep rooted that is dated back in the prehistoric region, the United Kingdom of Britain is created from the merging up of the Kingdom of Scotland with that of Kingdom of England and Wales on 1st May, 1707. This historical agreement was signed by parliaments of Scotland and England under the Treaty of Union. Queen Anne was the first to rule the monarchy after this agreement. On 1st January 1801, the Kingdom of Ireland was merged with the Kingdom of Great Britain and created the United Kingdom of Great Britain. An integrated Parliament of the United Kingdom was established in place of separate Parliaments of Ireland and Great Britain. This was the outcome of centuries of historical events that include the Irish Rebellion of 1641, the attack of ruling Normans in Ireland, War of American Independence and many more. The history of 19th and 20th century has witnessed the rise of Irish nationalism among the Catholic, the Anglo-Irish War and many more. However, according to the Royal and Parliamentary Titles Act of 1927, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland was renamed and is recognized as the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland respectively. The country is growing continously economically.


Geography

The landscape of the UK is varied as it ranges from the lowland fens of the Britain to the Grampian Mountains of Scotland. Wales and Scotland are the major parts of the UK that are surrounded by mountains. The Pennine is located in the middle of the northern England. In the southern and eastern part of England, you can find low lying coastal regions that even include Somerset wetlands. In the South West of England and in the Northern Ireland, there are isolated highlands like Dartmoor or the Mourne Mountains. Lough Neagh situated in Northern Ireland is the largest lake of the UK which covers almost 396 square kilometers. Windermere, Loch Lomond etc are some of the well known lakes that are located in Scotland and the English Lake District. The Severn is the longest river of the UK that runs through the nation for almost 338 km. It starts from Wales and enters into the Atlantic Ocean. Thames, Mersey and the Trent are some of the other major rivers of the nation.
